Shrewsbury Education Service has your welfare and happiness as its main priority and accordingly promises to select accommodation which suits your needs and wishes, whether it be a private room in a family house or Independent or State boarding accommodation within a school.
The nature of your accommodation is clearly of great importance as it will influence your ability to learn and to relax and will significantly contribute to your enjoyment of your stay in England.
There is no better way to learn English and to become acquainted with the English culture than to live amongst welcoming and caring English people. Over the years, we have enjoyed long and successful experience working with our host families and we liaise with them on a regular basis to ensure that your stay is as happy and comfortable as possible. All our hosts have been carefully selected by us and share our belief in the academic and cultural advantages which are to be gained through living within a family. Their hospitality gives you the opportunity to live and study just like your British counterparts, whilst ensuring that you have privacy and quiet whenever you need it. Although the hosts are recompensed for the provision of food and lodging, they do not have financial gain as their main concern. In order to promote the practice of English and unless specifically requested, no students of the same native language are accommodated together in the same family. Some of our hosts live in larger houses however and in these cases two students of different mother tongues do live together, each having their own bedroom of course.
The core strength of our provision lies in our flexibility and in the personal service we offer to each student. We do our utmost to place you with a host family whose circumstances and character correspond with your requirements. Of course, each family is different, but all of them offer excellent facilities and guarantee accommodation in a separate room. The accommodation, usually located within easy reach of the town centre, varies from house to house but always follows the criteria of private room with bed, wardrobe and drawers as well as facilities to study. Some rooms even have en-suite facilities. Each room is very comfortable and private. Full-board is provided comprising of breakfast, lunch (packed lunch on school days) and evening meal. Families often take students to other cities, including them in theatre or cinema visits and generally involve them in their family activities. A lot of our students thus gain insights into British culture, which will be valuable to them in the future. Indeed, being integrated into school and home life in England is not only educationally enriching, but is also a catalyst for the student's growth into maturity as an individual.
A typical example of a host family is the Gurden family. Debbie and Paul Gurden live in a semi-detached Victorian house with their three delightful children, Daisy (16), Georgia (15) and Richard (13). As Paul deals in antiques, their home has a lot of period furniture and is very cosy. Debbie is a nurse by profession whilst their children all go to the same school. The family lives in Shrewsbury, a short walk from the town centre, accessed through the beautiful Quarry Park situated within the loop of the River Severn.
Adam's College offers boarding accommodation for pupils and students. Younger pupils live in the Main House with the Heads of Boarding, whilst older pupils live in double, triple or quadruple rooms in supervised accommodation. The combination of a friendly, supportive and homely atmosphere helps the students to feel comfortable and integrated into the student group. Boarders come from all around the world with different national, cultural and religious backgrounds and learn to respect and value each other as individuals.
* Boarding is only available at Adam's School and is subject to availability
