On Saturday 28th January we will be taking a group of students to visit the exciting and historic city of Liverpool. We will be taking the train from Shrewsbury and arriving at Liverpool Lime Street Station for a day of sightseeing and exploring.
Liverpool has a long and important history based in its past maritime dominance. This led to extensive mercantile trading worldwide and when industrialisation rapidly increased in Britain so did the city and great wealth was created. This wealth is reflected in the grand architecture throughout the city and the whole docklands area including its iconic dockside buildings (‘The Three Graces’) which has been granted UNESCO status. The famous cruise liner Titanic was registered here and a memorial to the great disaster and loss of life stands on the Pier Head.
Liverpool is also known worldwide for its football teams, namely Everton FC and Liverpool FC. In the world of horseracing Liverpool is the home of the famous Aintree Racecourse where The Grand National has been run each year since 1839.
No mention of Liverpool can pass without reference to its musical culture. Because of its wealth of live music performances, the area has provided countless well known bands and performers over the years. The Beatles were of course a world phenomenon at the height of the ‘Merseybeat’ era in the 1960’s and there is a lot to explore with music connections including The Cavern Club, Penny Lane and the Liverpool Wall of Fame.
We are looking forward to this trip and are sure it will be a very enjoyable day as well as educational.
