English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Shrewsbury Education Service offers tuition and support in English for speakers of other languages in addition to all A Level and Professional courses. This is essential firstly because Universities in the United Kingdom, America and other English-speaking countries require proof of language competence before a student is offered a place on a degree course. In addition our ESOL courses and support improve students’ academic achievement in all subjects, particularly in Humanities but also in all Sciences. back to top

ART - AS/A Levels

Art offers numerous opportunities to explore personal interests and ideas. The course encourages individuality of response and creative thinking. The skills acquired on this course improve the student’s ability to communicate and express ideas visually, verbally and in the written form.

During the first year of the course you will produce three unites of work. Two units are coursework elements which are set by the teachers. The third unit is a controlled test for which questions are set by the examining board. This unit will be similar to those undertaken at GCSE. back to top

BIOLOGY - AS/A Levels

Biology is a challenging subject that appeals to students who have a genuine interest in living organisms and how they relate to their environment. The work load is demanding and involves extensive reading, discussion and analysis, together with practical laboratory work – particularly microscopy. The course includes some biochemistry. In addition to factual recall, students are expected to consider the social, economic, environmental and technological aspects of Biology.

The course is comprised of modules of which 3 each year must be attempted including: Human Health and Disease, Living Transport Systems and Applications of Genetics, together with more general biological topics – Cell Biology particularly.

Experience of the role of experimental work is important in any course of Biology. Practical coursework is a vital part of the course and in each year students have to submit a major piece of practical coursework to the exam board – which forms part of their final grade. During the course the students will carry out a range of experiments and will examine many micrographs and microscopic slides. Though plant dissection is included DISSECTION OF ANIMALS IS NOT.

Those planning on taking Biology at University are encouraged to study AS level Chemistry as well. back to top

BUSINESS STUDIES - AS/A Levels

Business Studies is concerned with the ways in which individuals and groups work and organise themselves to create wealth, both individually and as a society – cash, houses, factories, businesses, health and education all constitute wealth, either of one person, a group of people or a society as a whole. As an employer, employee, customer or share holder you will have a stake in the business which make up the new global economy. Your lives will be shaped by e. commerce, global politics and global economics, a world in which dynamic, flexible participants will set the agenda.

The courses offered use a problem solving approach to help students understand the nature and workings of business and industry. The emphasis is on developing the ability to recognise, define, analyse and evaluate problems. Students will make extensive use of computing facilities in the preparation of their work and will be encouraged to develop their skills in this area. The emphasis is on real and practical application of business principles.

AS Level is designed to be completed in one year and is made up of 3 modules:

  1. Businesses, their Objectives and Environment
  2. Business Decisions
  3. Business Behaviour

A2 Level comprises a further 3 modules to be studied in the second year:

  1. An individual research assignment – a business report of approximately 4000 words
  2. Business Strategy – bringing together the whole study
  3. An optional module – students select from Further Marketing, Further Accounting and Finance, Further People in Organisations (Human Resource Management) and Further Operations Management (Production)

CHEMISTRY - AS/A Levels

Chemistry is the study of the elements and their compounds. It is a science subject, so practical work is an important part of the course.

Before you start this course, you should have achieved at least a BB grade in GCSE Double Science, or an equivalent level of attainment. Other subjects that would go well with Chemistry at AS or A level are Biology, Physics and Mathematics. However, many other combinations of subjects are also suitable.

With a qualification in Chemistry you could go on to Further or Higher Education, studying Chemistry itself or one of the other sciences or related subjects; or work in science-based industry such as biotechnology, chemical engineering or materials sciences. Students intending to study the biological or environmental sciences at degree level are strongly advised to take A or AS level Chemistry and it is essential for those intending to read pharmacy or subjects in the medical field.

DRAMA & THEATRE STUDIES - AS/A Levels

The drama & Theatre course demands practical, creative and communication skills in almost equal measure. You will extend your ability to create drama and theatre, either in a performing or production role. You will also be required to write about drama and to develop your powers of analysis to become an informed critic. The course will involve taking part in drama productions, as well as studying plays and playwrights.

Previous experience is not essential but it is important to be interested in gaining a greater understanding of how theatre and plays work and that you are keen to be involved with performances. A healthy curiosity about issues and ideas and having a creative instinct for communicating your views through drama is a good starting point. Your interest may be centred on acting, writing or on the visual and technical side of theatre and you can develop your skills in any or all of these areas.

Whilst every attempt is made to keep costs to a minimum, an integral part of the course is to attend productions of live theatre. Students opting for Drama need to be aware that the cost of these visits will be borne by themselves. back to top

ELECTRONICS - AS/A Levels

The course is designed around a systems approach which introduces a wide range of transducers and input and output and processing systems and encourages practical, problem-solving skills. Comprising 3 units: Introductory Electronics, Further Electronics and Coursework.

For those interested in the electronics in our everyday lives and want to know more of how it works and what can be achieved. Leads to Higher Education, Computing or Systems Control Technology or work in Communications. back to top

ENGLISH LANGUAGE - AS/A Levels

One of the most popular courses. It is an exciting and challenging course that provides students with opportunities to examine the language they use in everyday contexts much more closely. The course is designed so that you are encouraged to develop your interest and enjoyment in the use of English through learning more about its structures and functions, drawing on your own experience and knowledge of language change and variation. You will learn to express yourself in speech and writing with increasing competence and sophistication.

AS level introduces you to an understanding of concepts and frameworks for the study of language and enables you to apply these to investigate your own and other’s use of speech and writing. back to top

ENGLISH LITERATURE - AS/A Levels

The English Literature course focuses on the study of the three main literary genres: poetry, prose and drama. It aims to broaden and to enrich students’ knowledge and understanding of a wide field of literature. The course includes study of the work of North American writers such as Toni Morisson, Tennessee Williams and Margaret Atwood along with that of great British writers including Shakespeare, Emily Bronte and Thomas Hardy.

Several theatre trips are organised during the course to venues such as Stratford (Royal Shakespeare Company), London (The National Theatre) and Manchester (Royal Exchange Theatre) back to top

ENGLISH COMBINED - AS/A Levels

A combination of English Language and English Literature encourages students to study language and literature as interconnecting disciplines, rather than separate subjects and the aim is to deepen the understanding and enjoyment of both. The course offers the opportunity of studying a wide range of materials including the spoken work, short stories, novels, drama, poetry and non-fiction texts. It also encourages students to develop their writing skills, with plenty of scope for your own ideas and interests to be included in the coursework components of the syllabus. back to top

FILM STUDIES - AS/A Levels

A course of study relevant to students who wish to pursue film and related subjects into higher education. The syllabus makes possible a systematic study of cinema and film based on the key conceptual issues. Considerable attention is focused on the dominant forms of Hollywood and British cinema.

The course seeks to encourage in candidates an enjoyment and understanding of a wide range of different types of film. It allows students to develop their personal responses to films and to study the critical languages used to analyse them. At AS level the aims are to develop candidates’ interest in and appreciation of cinema, specifically through studying the film as text, producers and audiences and messages and values in film. AS Students will study three units: making meaning of film, producers and audiences and British Cinema, its messages and values. There are 2 examinations and a coursework section on a chosen film. back to top

GEOGRAPHY - AS/A Level

A level Geography is relevant to the world you live in today. As custodians of the planet within an increasingly global community, Geography plays a pivotal role in the plans and decisions that affect people, places, cultures and the environment. Geography is all around us and is central to the lives of every global citizen. It is concerned with both people and places as well as real world issues that affect all of our lives.

The course comprises three units of assessment: Changing landforms and their management, Managing change in human environments and Environmental investigation. This final unit will normally be undertaken during the field work week to North Yorkshire in the Autumn Term. A range of topics are available for the coursework to allow personal geographical interest and preferences to be pursued.

Whilst every attempt is made to keep costs to a minimum, an integral part of the course is to attend on a field study week. Students opting for Geography need to be aware that the cost of this trip will be borne by themselves. back to top

GEOLOGY - AS/A2 Level

Geology enables you to interpret the landscape around you and to understand the forces that cause volcanoes to erupt, continents to move and gold the valuable. Geology is part of our lives from the slate on roofs toe the rare metals in our mobiles phones.

The course comprises 3 modules:

  1. The evidence we have for the nature of the inside of the Earth; Minerals, rocks and fossils in the crust (with the emphasis on how to recognise them and where they come from); The world pattern of plates and how they move.
  2. A number of field visits, practical sessions on identification and geological map interpretation.
  3. A study of geology and man, where we look at earthquakes, landslips, dams, mines and al the problems they cause worldwide.

HISTORY - AS/A Level

This A level History course offers a chance to look at how our world today has been shaped by events earlier this century. We make every effort to make the subject studied accessible and interesting while maintaining and academic approach. Students are encouraged to act and think like historians.

Students will study Modern European and British History from 1870 to 1964. This includes issues such as the Russian Revolution, Hitler, Mussolini and the causes of World War II. This gives students a great insight into the shape of the world today.

First year study is at AS level and will contain:

  1. Nazi Germany 1933-1945
  2. Italy 191901945 (Mussolini and Fascism)
  3. British Foreign Policy 1039-1964

Applied ICT - AS/A Level

The course will develop students’ communication and decision-making skills. These are harnessed to build and maintain an e-portfolio as a showcase for their achievements. The skills acquired through study for the AS level in Applied ICT will support further study in any subject area.

As a modular course this will be assessed by either students submitted e-portfolios or by the completion of exam board set tasks conducted in the ICT rooms on school computers.

The first year will contain modules:

LAW - AS/A2 Level

This course will give a thorough background in the English Legal System and some experience of criminal and civil law. You will also study themes such as The growing role of the Judges and How just is our legal system?

The course comprises 3 modules:

  1. Law Making (the process of creating Law both in Parliament and through the Courts)
  2. Dispute Solving (the legal resolution of civil and criminal cases and the personalities involved in that)
  3. Concepts of Liability (the substantive elements of Crimes and Torts)

Additional to lessons students visit courts and have the opportunity to meet legal practitioners and attend conferences. back to top

MATHEMATICS - AS/A Level

For those students with a leaning towards Mathematics, this course will provide both interest and enjoyment. Students will look into the more formal approaches and techniques of Pure Mathematics, gaining an insight into why Mathematics works and how it can be used. In the first term at AS level the topics will include a revision of algebraic techniques followed by calculus, trigonometry, statistics, probability and numerical methods building on previous learning levels. A course of Mechanics will also be studied and this will develop real situations in both traditional and modern styles giving an opportunity for all students to realise the power of Mathematics and gain a sense of achievement. Although only scientific calculators are allowed on some components, a graphic calculator is very useful for use on this course. back to top

FURTHER MATHEMATICS - AS/A Levels

Students who really enjoy maths and who anticipate studying maths or a maths related subject at university should consider Further Mathematics. The units taken at AS level are independent of those for A level mathematics, however many of the skills are transferable.

During the first term the topics will be discrete mathematics techniques, graphs, networks and the travelling salesperson problem will be introduced. Later, students will learn about the use of the statistics and then expand their core maths skills by studying matrices, complex numbers and series. The aim of this course is to broaden the skill base of students which can later be applied to more practical applications. back to top

MEDIA STUDIES - AS/A Levels

The concept of studying products of the newspaper, television, film and recording industries is likely to be new to most students. The basic aim of the course is to enable students to become media literate: able to analyse media output and produce their own media projects. You will therefore need to be both analytical and creative.

During the first year (AS level) students will study a range of media texts and topics, as well as the construction and deconstruction of media products, in the context of the key conceptual areas of media forms and conventions – Media Institution, Media Audiences and Media Representations. A practical production and study for a textual analysis examination (2 hours) will be expected plus a 1hour 30 minutes examination which studies new technologies in the Media. back to top

MODERN LANGUAGES - AS/A2 Levels

French – German - Spanish An A2 language qualification is, of course, indispensable for anyone intending to study a language or languages at university, whether as a main course or a subsidiary. This category also includes those starting a new language (like Russian or Japanese, for example). In addition, and A2 in French – German - Spanish is an extremely valuable qualification for any student wanting to work in Europe or for one of the companies or agencies in the United Kingdom with strong European links. back to top

MUSIC - AS/A2

A previous qualification in music is not essential as long as you can already play an instrument and read music. The course requires performing, composing, listening and analytical skills in almost equal measure. You will improve your skills in performing and composing in a range of styles. You will listen to a wide variety of music and develop a more informed appreciation of how and why it was written and/or performed.

At AS level the course consists of 3 units:

  1. Performing – on a musical instrument or sing and as part of an ensemble as well as a soloist
  2. Developing Musical Ideas – learning the craft of composition to submitting 2 compositions and 2 exercises in a range of styles
  3. Listening and Understanding – throughout the course you will be expected to develop and improve these skills

PHOTOGRAPHY - AS/A2 Level

The creation of imagery to convey a message or idea. At AS Level you will experiment with materials and proceses using primarily a traditional darkroom but also digital technologies. The subject also requires the academic study of the ideas presented by photographers and other artists. back to top

PHYSICAL EDUCATION - AS/A Levels

At both levels of this course the development of different methods of study drawn from a wide range of activities with the focal point being the performer and the performance.

At AS level the candidate will study: Anatomy and physiology relating to physical performance – Acquisition of skill – Contemporary issues (e.g. recreation and leisure, organisation of sport, sponsorship and media etc.) The theoretical aspects of the course will be examined at the end of each year.

There will be a practical involvement, which aims to develop the skills required to perform effectively in both individual and team activities. As well as practical performance, students are assessed on their ability to evaluate their own performance and that of others. They are also expected to produce a personal performance portfolio on their chosen sports, which will include their understanding o g the sport and how it relates to the theoretical aspects of the course (e.g. the history of the sport, or the fitness requirements etc.) back to top

PHYSICS - AS/A Levels

As well as studying the physical processes that govern the living world today, we consider how these fundamental laws have shaped our past, and how they will also determine our future. Physics is for the thinking person who can use their intuition as well as using their ability to recall certain pieces of information. Physics has posed challenges for some of the world’s greatest thinkers – from the revelations of Sir Isaac Newton to the genius of Albert Einstein.

The course is split into 5 parts:

  1. CORE CONTENT-work on Forces, Waves, Electricity and Magnetism
  2. PRACTICAL EXAM-assesses students’ practical skills as they apply their knowledge of practical problems
  3. COSMOLOGY-application of knowledge learned in the study of the Big Bang and the expanding universe
  4. Hubble and the life cycle of the stars and the direction of the universe
  5. Einstein with particular reference to his theories of Special Relativity

Students will be expected to undertake a great deal of their own research through independent study, developing problem solving skills to a high level and contributing their own ideas through discussion and interaction with their peers. back to top

PSYCHOLOGY - AS/A Levels

This course provides a firm foundation for other courses in Psychology and is very useful for candidates wishing to follow careers in the social sciences, business and medical disciplines. Psychology, defined as “the scientific study of human experience”, is playing an increasing part in the modern technological world.

This is a modular course. The AS level comprises 3 compulsory units – 2 written papers: Introducing Psychology and Social and Cognitive Psychology and 1 practical investigation, assessed by the examining board. back to top

RELIGIOUS STUDIES - AS/A2 Levels

If you are interested in psychology, sociology, literature, history, archaeology or just people? If you like to make your own decisions, to think for yourself and to draw your own conclusions from evidence? Then Religious Studies is a subject course that will be very beneficial.

You will develop your ability to examine and evaluate everyday moral issues and stimulate your powers of self-expression. You do not need to have any particular religious views or to be an especially profound thinker – simply someone who is interested in your world.

At AS level students will study an introductory module as well as modules on Developments in Christian Thought – Liberation and Feminist Theologies and Religious Ethics. back to top

SOCIOLOGY - AS/A2 Levels

Sociology is a wide-ranging and lively academic discipline which poses questions and encourages students to develop a critical and open-minded understanding of the complex and diverse society in which we live. It also enables development of useful, transferable skills that are essential for both employment and university. Enthusiastic discussion and exchange of opinions is likely to be a central part of the course.

At AS level students will need to complete 3 modules:

  • A study of Youth Culture
  • Complete a Research Report and/or method exam
  • The final module requires students to have an understanding of culture and formation of identities by looking at the socialisation process and impact that gender, nation, ethnicity and social class have on the formation of identity.

TECHNOLOGY - Product Design - AS/A2 Levels

The course will allow you to build on knowledge of Design and Technology and specialise in one of 2 areas: Textiles; Resistant Materials. The opportunity is provided to study, propose and realise prototype solutions to designing and making opportunities closely linked to the real world of design and manufacture.

Textiles: provides wide opportunities ranging from fashion and aesthetics to industrial uses of textiles, the development of creative and individual work and industrial and commercial practice. Resistant Materials: is intended to reflect the wide ranging activities of professional designers and covers a wide range of materials. back to top

TRAVEL & TOURISM - AS/A2 Levels

Designed to create an understanding of what the travel and tourism industry comprises; the skills needed to work in the industry and how it is affected by current issues and the way forward to responsible tourism developments.

Comprising 3 modules:

  1. Industry: An overview of the development, structure and scale of the industry.
  2. Customer: Looking at the needs of the customers and how they are met, demonstrating the ability to deliver some aspects of customer service and an evaluation of the customer service at a facility.
  3. Destination Europe: Looking at both leisure and business destinations in Europe.
